The 411 on Fall Senior Sessions: When, Where & What to Wear
Let’s talk about fall senior sessions! 🍂 If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for this season — the golden light, cozy outfits, and colorful backdrops make it one of my absolute favorite times of year to capture seniors. Whether you’re dreaming of fiery fall leaves or a location with a more timeless vibe, fall truly delivers.
Beyond the beauty, fall also makes sense logistically. Senior year is a whirlwind — especially once spring rolls around. Between prom, sports, graduation prep, and all the lasts, it can feel impossible to squeeze in senior photos. That’s why I always recommend scheduling them in the fall when life is calmer and you can truly enjoy the experience.
Here’s a little month-by-month breakdown of what you can expect if you’re planning a fall session:
🍃 September
Think of September as summer’s softer encore. It’s still warm here, but without the sweltering heat — perfect for mixing summer favorites with the first hints of fall fashion.
Where we can shoot: Almost anywhere! This is your month for dreamy flower farms, lush garden spaces, or even the water (bonus: it’s usually the warmest it will be all year). September also tends to surprise us with late wildflowers, which always photograph beautifully.
What to wear: Flowy dresses, skirts, shorts, or rompers work so well, but if you want to sneak in some cozy sweater vibes, you totally can without overheating. It’s the best of both worlds.
🍂 October
Ah, October — the golden child of fall! Honestly, this month has the best weather of the entire year. Warm afternoons, crisp evenings, and that magic glow that makes everything feel cinematic.
Where we can shoot: Looking for bold fall color? Lakesides and riversides explode with vibrant shades this time of year. Want something more classic or season-neutral? Downtown streets, wide-open fields, or oak groves are stunning, too.
What to wear: October is made for variety! Dresses and skirts still work, but now you can really lean into layers — cardigans, light jackets, boots, and cozy textures. This is the time to play with outfits that feel like you.
❄️ November
November brings a whole new kind of magic. From bold fall tones to the chance of a surprise dusting of snow, it’s the month where every session feels unique. Some years, it’s warm enough to shoot comfortably through Thanksgiving, which means we can still capture gorgeous, golden-hour moments outdoors.
Where we can shoot: Vineyards are breathtaking this time of year, with leaves that turn brilliant reds, oranges, and golds. Regional parks, preserves, and even downtown spots also shine with color. The variety is endless.
What to wear: Layers are your best friend. Think chunky sweaters, boots, scarves, and jackets that bring in those cozy vibes without needing to bundle up too much. The air is crisp, but you won’t be freezing — it’s just right.
One note: November tends to fill up fast with family sessions (hello, Christmas card season), so if this month feels right for you, I recommend locking in your spot early.
